ROC UR Body Family Fun Fest 2012 at Howard Park

By DeDe Hausmann

Mark Friday evening, September 14th, on your calendars for the 2nd ROC UR BODY FAMILY FUN FEST.  It’s from 5:30-7:30pm at Howard Park in downtown South Bend and it’s FREE!!!

Activities include: zumba, jump roping with the Kroc Center, a rock-climbing wall, cooking demonstrations, free healthy pizza samples, chocolate milk (via yours truly) as an after-work-out/after-play beverage, and so much more!!!  Area organizations with be there with fun fitness ideas/games for the whole family.  And Notre Dame athletes will be there to help with the activities and the booths just like last year.  We’ll also be having our last bike round-up for the year.  Bring kids bikes that aren’t being ridden anymore and area fire fighters will fix them up, good as new, with help from kids needing those bikes.  Is that cool or what?!!!

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and that’s why we have chosen to host this fun but relevant event at this time.  Health advocates insist that everyone needs good nutrition and daily exercise for helping bodies get fit and stay fit.  When healthy habits are ingrained in childhood, that could help ensure healthy habits for a lifetime!!!  We have to help our young people avoid serious health issues that many adults have today, such as heart disease, diabetes, and other chronic illnesses.  And if we can make daily physical activity and healthy eating seem like fun, kids should continue those habits for life.

Childhood obesity has almost tripled over the last 30 years.  In 2010, according to the Center for Disease Control, around 17% of kids from ages 2-19 were already obese.  And statistics have shown that if a child is obese, he/she will likely become an obese adult.

Kids, as well as adults, need to balance their calorie intake with physical activity.  We all need to eat more healthy foods, like veggies, fruits, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy foods, and lean meats and to consume less sodium, saturated and trans fats, added sugars and refined grains.

The key is getting kids at young ages to be healthy and the Reducing Obesity Coalition of St. Joseph County, Indiana, is helping do this via our ROC UR BODY FAMILY FUN FEST on Friday, September 14th, from 5:30-7:30pm at Howard Park in South Bend. Families can register their planned attendance here  or here.

We look forward to a fun, active and healthy eve for all.  Come join us!!!
