Fun Food at the 2012 Indiana State Fair

By Diane Ruyack

Spaghetti ice cream? Can you believe it?  It is the signature food at the Indiana State Fair!  The creation does not actually mix meatballs with ice cream. Instead it is made with gelato noodles, strawberry tomato sauce, shredded white chocolate cheese and “chocolate meatballs. Sounds like fun!  There are so many delicious and fun fair foods for Hoosiers to try.

This year’s fair will also include another deep-fried specialty — Girl Scout cookies, specifically the Samoa. They will be dipped in batter, dunked in the fryer, then sold for $5 an order.  Proceeds go to the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana.

The creative concessionaires at the State Fair are bringing new concoctions to this year’s fair. They have whipped up deep-fried M&M’s, deep-fried Hershey’s drops and deep-fried bubble gum. The latter treat is not actually gum but marshmallows sprayed with bubble gum extract, then dipped in foam cake batter, deep-fried and served on a stick. Wow!

Check out these burgers.   One is a raspberry donut chicken burger — a deep-fried chicken breast sandwiched between two raspberry-jelly-filled donuts. How does this sound? The other burger is a bacon peanut butter banana burger.  Bet Elvis would have liked it!

Previous deep-fried foods at the fair have included pickles, Twinkies, Snickers bars, ice cream, Kool-Aid and bacon.  Now if you want just some excellent fair food, go to the Dairy Bar.  New this year is the Lemon Chiller milkshake, cool, creamy and refreshing.  The new sandwich is pepper jack and American cheese on sourdough.  The mixture of spicy and milk cheeses ooze between two pieces of toasted goodness.  These two are a match made in heaven.  Of course you could indulge in a chocolate shake or a huge moose tracks ice cream cone at the Dairy Bar.  You certainly can get your 3 every day and enjoy every bite.
