How do you know what to get your mom for her big day? The typical gifts are cards, flowers and/or candy! Let’s be creative this year! So what to get? Start planning now!
First, think about what your mother likes. What are her interests and hobbies? You want to make sure that your gift will be something that she will find interesting and not something that will be lumped in the same category as junk email. She is your mother so you should know what she likes and doesn’t like.
Second, if you are really stumped, get her something practical. Does she need anything? Has she been complaining about the lack of anything in her home? If you have visited her house recently, think back and try to remember if there was anything that she might find useful that she doesn’t already have. Many times these things are overlooked but can make her life a lot easier.
Just make your gift convey your feelings to her on how much you appreciate her being your mom. Anna Jarvis’ campaign is the reason we have a formal holiday. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared that Mother’s Day should be celebrated as a national holiday on the second Sunday in May. It is a celebration of mothers…dedicated to honoring the women who give so much to their families without asking for anything in return. Perhaps every day should be Mother’s Day, but most families are too busy with everyday business to say thank you for every meal or every good night kiss. Once every year, the world stops being busy and says thank you. What mothers love most is the fact that their families really do notice all that they do and for one day every mom is queen for a day…
A heart-in-the hand magnet is a fun, clever do-it-yourself Mother’s Day greeting requires construction paper, glue and scissors. Trace your hand on a piece of pink construction paper and carefully cut it out. Next, cut out a heart from red construction paper, making sure it will fit inside your handprint. Glue a heart onto your paper handprint and write a special Mother’s Day message inside the heart! Another easy gift for kids to make are coupons for jobs around the house like set the table, rake the leaves, clean a room, dust, make a snack, pick flowers, take Mom to the park or go for a walk!
If your Mom loves tea, make a tea basket for her to relax and enjoy. I’m sure you can find an unused basket around the house. Have someone buy some different flavors of tea, some pretty napkins, maybe a teapot or teacup, some jelly or jam and a scone mix. The tea could be switched out if your Mom likes coffee or juice, etc. Moms are special and celebrating on her day will make her feel very special!
