National Chip and Dip Day!

By Michelle Plummer

Chip (or anything you wish) & Dip day is here!

According to Webster:Dip is an immersion of something into a liquid to coat such as a candle.  As Hoosiers, we have embraced and celebrated that thought!  As this is quote a National Chip & Dip day no one really knows who started this day, or why.  But, do we really need a reason to dip?  I say NO!  We need more DIPS to immerse chips, wings, pretzels, carrots, celery and even apples into!  Therefore, it is my attempt to provide you links to some really great dips and some of my own to promote and keep this “National Holiday” alive!

For Fruit:

1 cup vanilla (or any flavor) yogurt and ½ cup marshmallow fluff- blend together and you are set!  This has a rich creaminess of whipped cream, but will really coat berries and pears.

A must try is chocolate cream cheese, if you have not indulged yet…please immerse berries in this treat, graham crackers, and yes, apples!

For Veggies:

1 cup sour cream with 1 cup yogurt is a solid standby.  Now get creative with the spices, chutneys and sauces as tie-ins and blend-ins.  You are looking for ¼ cup of additives.

Combine 1 cup Greek yogurt and a package of dry seasoning mix either a dressing or a taco, fajita flavored is a great   use the seasoning packet  to taste, but this is a delicious way to add a spread to a tortilla or bagel and then load it up with veggies.

For Wings/Pork Nuggets

Stir together 2 cups yogurt, hot sauce and a touch of mayo; this is traditional now go get creative!  Add some minced celery, grated onion, and a seasoning packet for Quesadillas.  These type of spice packets make it easy and tasty for you and your guests!

…and other stuffs

Cream cheese, sour cream, whipped cream, yogurt are great but my favorite dip is a homemade cheese ball!

8 ounces white cheddar cheese, grated (I use Cabot lowfat white cheddar), 2 tablespoons grated onion, ½ cup mayo, ½ cup raspberry jam, 1 tsp fresh thyme, dash of pepper, add cheese, onion, mayo, thyme and pepper in resealable bag and mix until well blended.  Form cheese mixture into a fun shape and top with raspberry jam.  This is perfect for any party with toasted bread rounds, pita, or crackers!

Let me know what your favorite dairy dip is…I can always use some new ideas whether it is for a party, a game or a quite evening at home with a good movie, dips provide a great way to enjoy your dairy in a fun and tasty way!
