By Diane Ruyack

Lip smacking healthy snacks for Valentine’s Day can create a new twist on traditional treats. Here are several ideas that are easy to make!

Preschoolers like strawberry yogurt combined with 2 cups strawberry or plain Cool Whip and it is perfect to allow them to dip fresh fruit into it.

Different sized heart-shaped cookie cutters can create fun meals and snacks for the kids. They associate Valentine’s Day with candy and other sweets, so use the cookie cutters for making heart-shaped pancakes, sandwiches (their favorite kind), biscuits, etc. (anything that’s healthy for them).

To make your cupcakes or muffins into heart-shaped, pour batter into a muffin pan as usual (be sure to use paper liners), then put a marble between the paper and the tin before you bake them…this makes a great and easy heart-shaped cupcake

Sometimes you can purchase colored bread (pink) or bagels from the local bakery. Make into mini sandwiches or let them spread strawberry cream cheese on top for a healthy snack.

To make a Valentine wreath, Coat bottom of bundt pan with non-stick spray, sprinkle candy hearts all over the bottom of bundt pan. Follow recipe for mixing Rice Krispies Treats, except add a little red food coloring to butter mixture to make it pink and mix and press into bundt pan. Flip out and you have a beautiful wreath with hearts on it.

How about a krispies Kiss! Make Rice Krispies Treats recipe and press the completed mixture into a small funnel. Remove from funnel and wrap with colored Saran Wrap! Attach a strip to the top of the “kiss” with a Valentine’s phrase of the child’s choice. These make cute gifts for parents.

Have the children cut heart shapes out of prepared frozen pie crusts using cookie cutters. Curl up the edges and put their choice of Jelly or jam in side it ( not too much). The oven should be at 350-375 degrees, and the heart tarts should cook for about 10 minutes or until golden brown.

For a Valentine lunch, buy pre-made pizza dough or make homemade pizza dough. Roll the dough out and use heart-shaped cookie cutters to make hearts out of the dough.  Top the mini pizza’s with sauce and cheese.  Bake according to the instructions on the dough can or your homemade recipe. Serve with milk for a nutrient rich meal!  End the meal with a heart-shaped pie of angel food cake with a drizzle of strawberry or chocolate icing or fruit.

Keep Valentine’s Day a day to treat our hearts to simple pleasures and simple healthy snacks!
