Surviving Holiday Stress

It’s that time of year again! Between catching up with friends and family, shopping for gifts, traveling, cooking and participating in other holiday activities, it’s very easy to forget about taking care of yourself. All of this in addition to regular activities can be extremely stressful, but maintaining a consistent exercise routine can help keep energy levels up for all those holiday festivities.

Over the years, I’ve found that it’s easiest to stick with exercise that you like when you are short on time. However, if you are willing to be adventurous, this is a great time to check out a new class at the gym since classes will likely be packed come January 1st. I just started taking Zumba classes, and it’s so much fun! And, it’s a terrific way to relax after a long day at the office.

Here are a few more ways to relieve stress and just be happier:

  • Plan, Plan, Plan. Time always seems to get away from me this time of year, so planning is extremely important. Schedule exercise like you would any other appointment and stick to it. Also, planning healthy meals in advance and having the ingredients on hand makes it much easier to whip something together when you get home from work.
  • Get enough sleep. For most people this is 7-9 hours. I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I don’t get enough sleep I have a lot less energy, so this one is important.
  • Don’t overeat. Instead of eating large meals or “saving” your calories for that holiday party, eat smaller meals throughout the day to fuel your metabolism and prevent you from overeating later.
  • Go outside. Even if there is snow on the ground, everyone can benefit from some sunshine. Take your exercise routine outside and benefit even more!
  • Don’t overbook yourself. Feeling run down is no fun. Schedule time for yourself and relax.

Most importantly, don’t forget what this time of year is all about: spending time with friends and family. Have a healthy and happy holiday season!
