Are You Ready for National Chocolate Milk Day?

By Mary Nicholson

Now, I really like milk, and I’m crazy about chocolate, but who knew there was an entire day on the calendar for celebrating the two?  I’m talking about National Chocolate Milk Day, which this year happens to fall on Tuesday, September 27- tomorrow.  What a yummy day!

Did you know that chocolate (or any flavored) milk has the same nutrition as white milk?  Yep!  Adding chocolate flavoring to milk doesn’t take away its nine essential nutrients.  All milk contains a unique combination of nutrients important for growth and development, and milk is the #1 food source of three of the four nutrients of concern identified by the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans: calcium, vitamin D and potassium. And flavored milk contributes only 3% of added sugars in the diets of children 2-18 years.

Here’s a little different perspective:  an 8-ounce serving of milk, flavored or not, gives kids as much vitamin A as two hard boiled eggs, as much calcium as 10 cups of raw spinach, as much phosphorus as 1 cup of kidney beans, as much vitamin D as 3/4 ounce of cooked salmon, as much riboflavin as 1/3 cup of whole almonds and as much potassium as one small banana.  That’s a whole lot of nutrition packed in there!

And let’s not forget about chocolate milk being a great recovery beverage after a strenuous workout.  The ratio of carbohydrate to protein is ideal for rebuilding muscle, and its electrolytes help with rehydration.

So raise your glass and let’s have a chocolate milk toast on September 27 – “Here’s to some tasty goodness!”  Enjoy!
