Hooray For National Chocolate Milkshake Day!

Bet you didn’t know that SEPTEMBER 12 is the day all of us CHOCOHOLICS can celebrate by indulging in an icy cold and delicious CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE and not feel guilty??!!!!  I sure didn’t, but I am looking forward to this day.

I went to Wikipedia to get their definition of what a milkshake is and I am salivating already!!!  They define it as “a sweet, cold beverage which is made from milk, ice cream or iced milk (GO DAIRY), and flavorings or sweeteners such as fruit syrup or CHOCOLATE SAUCE”.

You’ll be glad to hear that many full-service restaurants, soda fountains (there are still some of those around, thank Heavens) and diners usually prepare the shake “by hand” using scoops of ice cream and milk in a stainless steel drink mixer or blender.  I remember as a kid watching in wonder  as the ladies artistically prepared those thick and delicious milkshakes at Goodrich Dairy in Omaha.   Does that bring back many similar childhood memories??!!!

NOTE: today many fast food establishments do not make shakes by hand .  They use an automatic milkshake machine which does double-duty; it freezes and serves up a PREMADE milkshake mixture consisting of milk, a sweetened flavoring agent, and a thickening agent.  Some  quick serve restaurants still make their milkshakes (using ice cream and milk) by hand and they are: Back Yard Burgers, Jack in the Box, Long John Silvers, Hardees, Chick-fil-A, and Carl’s Jr.  Dairy Queen blends soft-serve ice cream or ice milk with flavorings for their hand-made shakes.

If you’re like me, sometimes I really need a CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE and I don’t want to go out for one.  I take 2 BIG scoops of chocolate ice cream (NOTE: many a time I buy reduced fat ice cream and it tastes great and saves some calories) and place it in my blender with 1 cup of milk and blend it ever so gently until it’s just smooth and creamy.  If we’ve only got vanilla ice cream I’ll add a couple of BIG squirts of chocolate syrup and milk and blend.  To jazz it up sometimes I’ll add semi-sweet, milk chocolate or mint chocolate baking chips AND/OR nuts, fruits, candy sprinkles or even peanut butter to the mixture before blending.  For pure indulgence, I’ll top it off with REAL WHIPPED CREAM.  Your imagination is the key to making a SPECTACULAR CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE.

Bet you’re ready for one now!   Since it’s made with ice cream and milk, you’ll be getting some of your 3 EVERYDAY OF DAIRY servings in to get those nutrients found in dairy products.  Sure you’ve got added calories but just remember: EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.  You’re not going to indulge in a decadent CHOCOLATE MILKSHAKE every day so when you do treat yourself, enjoy it to the last drop!!!!  I know I will especially on SEPTEMBER 12!
