Girl Scout Cookies and Icy Cold Milk- A Match Made in Heaven!

By DeDe Hausmann

It’s that time of year again when those energetic and friendly Girl Scouts and Brownie Scouts will be asking us to buy those delicious cookies that we all know and love.  Being a former Girl Scout (GS) and a former GS leader, I remember this time of year with special memories.

When I was a Brownie in the 50’s in Omaha—yes, that’s a few years back, I remember taking my brother’s wagon and going around the neighborhood with my bounty of Thin Mints, Shortbread, Peanut Butter, Vanilla and Chocolate Sandwich Cookies and we thought they were the best.  Of course compared to today those varieties probably sound pretty mundane.  This year there are 8 varieties:  Thin Mints (still #1 in sales), Shortbread (the original GS cookie), Carmel deLites (#2 in sales), Peanut Butter Patties (#3 in sales), Lemonades, Peanut Butter Sandwich, Thanks-A-Lot and the newest being Shout-Outs!

Here’s some Girl Scout COOKIE TRIVIA for you.

  • Juliette Gordon Low, the GS founder, initiated the cookie sale as a way for Girl Scouts to be self-reliant and to fund their own activities.  As an example, I remember many a campout and even being able to take a camping trip in the Colorado Rockies with the help of cookie sale monies.
  • In the 20’s and 30’s, scouts in different parts of the country baked their own simple sugar cookies.  The first documented sale of commercially baked cookies was in 1934 in Philadelphia with the first national cookie sale occurring in 1936.
  • There have been a number of companies that have baked GS cookies but now there are just 2 suppliers.
  • Every year almost 200 million packages of GS cookies are sold.
  • For every box of cookies sold, more than 2/3 of the purchase price stays within the area to help not only fund troops but many local Girl Scout programs!!!  Can you see why the GS cookie sales are so important?!!

OK,  now I’ve got you salivating for those yummy Girl Scout cookies.  This winter/spring will find the girls knocking on your door and we know you’ll be ready with your order.

Now what can make those cookies taste even better? Add a BIG, ICY COLD GLASS OF MILK and those cookies become even more heavenly!!!  With the beginning of the new year and may of us resolving to become more healthy, let’s counter-balance some of those cookie calories with nutritious and wholesome milk, which is packed with NINE (yes—I said NINE) essential nutrients including calcium, vitamins A, B-12, and D, protein, potassium, phosphorus, niacin and riboflavin.

So support your local Girl Scouts by purchasing some of those great GS cookies.  Then add a tasty, nutritious glass of milk and those cookies will seem to be HEAVEN sent.
